چکیده

The use of (a posteriori) error estimates is a fundamental tool in the application of adaptive numerical methods across a range of fluid flow problems. Such estimates are incomplete however, in that they do not necessarily indicate where to refine in order to achieve the most impact on the error, nor what type of refinement (for example h-refinement or p-refinement) will be best. This paper extends preliminary work of the authors (Comm. Comp. Phys., 7, 631-638, 2010), which uses adjoint-based sensitivity estimates in order to address these questions, to include application with p-refinement to arbitrary order and the use of practical a posteriori estimates. Results are presented which demonstrate that the proposed approach can guide both the h-refinement and the p-refinement processes, to yield improvements in the adaptive strategy compared to the use of more orthodox criteria.

Cover interpolation functions and h-enrichment in finite element method

This paper presents a method to improve the generation of meshes and the accuracy of numerical solutions of elasticity problems, in which two techniques of h-refinement and enrichment are used by interpolation cover functions. Initially, regions which possess desired accuracy are detected. Mesh improvment is done through h-refinement for the elements existing in those regions. Total error of th...

An hp-adaptive strategy for elliptic problems

In this paper a new hp-adaptive strategy for elliptic problems based on refinement history is proposed, which chooses h-, por hp-refinement on individual elements according to a posteriori error estimate, as well as smoothness estimate of the solution obtained by comparing the actual and expected error reduction rate. Numerical experiments show that exponential convergence can be achieved with ...

A two-dimensional moving finite element method with local refinement based on a posteriori error estimates

In this paper, we consider the numerical solution of time-dependent PDEs using a finite element method based upon rh-adaptivity. An adaptive horizontal method of lines strategy equipped with a posteriori error estimates to control the discretization through variable time steps and spatial grid adaptations is used. Our approach combines an r-refinement method based upon solving so-called moving ...

Anisotropic mesh adaption based on a posteriori estimates and optimisation of node positions

Boundary or interior layers are usually highly directional solution features. Thus, suitable anisotropic meshes, reflecting the directional features of the solution, provide the basis for the most efficient numerical approximation. Anisotropic mesh design strategies based upon a priori analysis have been developed for a variety of PDE problems and discretisations. On the other hand a posteriori...

On p-robust saturation for hp-AFEM

For the Poisson problem in two dimensions, we consider the standard adaptive finite element loop solve, estimate, mark, refine, with estimate being implemented using the p-robust equilibrated flux estimator, and, mark being Dörfler marking. As a refinement strategy we employ p-refinement. We investigate the question by which amount the local polynomial degree on any marked patch has to be incre...
